Earth Day, certified destruction, recycling and reuse to safeguard the planet
On April 22nd every year, 192 nations unite to celebrate our planet and its preservation: today OMTRA Società Benefit joins the celebrations for Earth Day, now in its 52nd edition.
Consumption (and waste) of paper and IT materials
In just 2021, 385 thousand tons of electronic waste were produced in Italy, 5.3% more than the previous year. PCs and laptops with obsolete systems, malfunctioning printers, old recordings on DVDs and VHS: these are just some of the disused devices.
The situation is certainly no better if you think about the average consumption of paper: it is estimated that an Italian uses 200 kg of paper per year, which is about 80 reams of A4 sheets. Four people use the paper equivalent to 2 trees. On a global scale, the trend is growing and it is expected that the consumption of paper and cellulose will double in 2060 compared to 2010. In addition, printed paper in offices often does not have a long life: an estimated 45% of it is no longer needed at the end of the workday.
Recycling IT and paper materials to save the planet
Reduce, reuse and recycle are the three main ways to reduce IT and paper waste.
To avoid the accumulation of e-waste, it is essential to continue using your devices until the natural end of their life, replacing defective components. In case it is not possible, it is very important to securely dispose and recycle through a proper procedure of dismantling and destruction of data IT devices, which allows to safeguard the environment by avoiding the dispersion of hazardous materials and allows to properly delete private information contained in Hard Disk and SSD, avoiding informatic leaks.
Regarding paper documents, in Italy, today the recycling rate is around 87.3%, exceeding the target set by the EU for 2035. In terms of environmental protection, recycling paper also allows you to make a positive impact on your planet, helping to reduce land use, water, energy, CO2 and oil consumption and the felling of trees.
The strategy of OMTRA Società Benefit
Since 1956, OMTRA has focused its strategy on social and environmental sustainability, collaborating with local realities, promoting the rehabilitation of vulnerable workers, recycling 100% of the paper produced, using electric vehicles and order pickers with lithium batteries. In addition, since 2021 OMTRA has changed its corporate purpose to Benefit Corporation, making a concrete commitment to create a beneficial effect on society and the environment, and in 2022 is completing the process of B-Corp certification.
Shred, Scan, Store, Recycle is our motto: we promote the digitization of documents, store documents with patented plastic-free boxes and recycle paper and IT materials. At the end of the certified destruction procedure, it is possible to request a Green Report, the document that indicates the positive impact that destroyed and recycled IT assets and materials have on our planet, in terms of safeguarding the ecosystem.
Since 2015, OMTRA is recycling 465 tons of finely "shredded" paper material, the result of the shredding process. In addition, together with our customers OMTRA is saving:
